Out look good for up coming bills to help industry: There are two bills making their way through the legislative process that are intended to help the outfitting industry and the Montana Hunting public in general. SB 255 has been dubbed the Process Bill is the one that will set in statute requirements for the FWP Commission to consider when making decisions that affect the allocation of public resources among users. When passed SB 255 will make the public process more transparent and more predictable. This is a very positive step toward allowing meaningful public involvement in the decision making process used by the Commission. HB361 is the Repeal Bill. It seeks to remove the limited entry permits established in the Missouri Breaks and 22 other hunting districts. Populations are over objective in most of these areas and punitive restrictions like these have no place in modern-day wildlife management. Both of these bills are being carried by the COALITION FOR THE RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE. This coalition, of which MOGA is a member, includes a diverse group of sportsmen and landowner interests. They have come together to try and right a terrible wrong. This coalition needs your active and financial support. In a nut shell, HB 361 will guarantee your special archery elk permit due to the draw being unlimited tags in our 411 and other special managed units. SB 255 will rein in the commission, so they will need to make decisions on biological reasons rather than personal agendas. Both of these bills are looking good to pass but can always use help. We are in favor of both of these bills as they will help our industry greatly. Here is how you can help. Get a message to each of the members of the House FWP Committee. I think the fastest and easiest way is to simply pick up the phone and call 406-444-4800 to leave a message for the entire House FWP Committee. Tell the operator that you are calling in about HB 361, In support and they will ask you your name and where you are from and the message will be hand delivered to each member of the Committee. It took me less than 2 minutes to call in and leave the message. "Wolf Wars" Schweitzer to feds: Montana will kill wolves that prey on elk Story-Discussion- By EVE BYRON Independant Record Gov. Brian Schweitzer has ordered gray wolf packs to be culled in the Bitterroot Valley to protect the dwindling elk population there, which could be in direct defiance of the federal Endangered Species Act. In addition, he has directed Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to respond to any livestock depredation throughout Montana by removing whole packs that kill livestock, and told game wardens not to investigate nor cite anyone in the northern tier of the state who kill or harass a wolf attacking their livestock. In a letter to Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar, Schweitzer said he was "profoundly frustrated by the lack of any actual results that recognize Montana's rights and responsibilities to manage its wildlife." "Montana has for years done everything that has been asked: adopting a model wolf management plan; enacting enabling legislation; and adopting the necessary implementing rules," Schweitzer wrote. "Our exemplary efforts have been ignored. I cannot continue to ignore the crying need for workable wolf management while Montana waits, and waits, and waits. "Therefore, I am now going to take additional necessary steps to protect the interests of Montana's livestock producers and hunters to the extent that I can within my authorities as governor." Schweitzer told the Independent Record that it wasn't any particular incident that prompted his decision; instead, it was the inactivity by Salazar's department. He added that he doesn't believe he's defying federal protections for wolves under the Endangered Species Act. "There's been a lot of motion masquerading as action in Washington, D.C., and we simply need to take action in Montana," he said. "We are doing things within the laws, according to our attorneys." Mike Leahy, Rocky Mountain regional director for Defenders of Wildlife, isn't so sure. "I appreciate the governor's frustration with the wolf issue, but I think he is doing long-term damage to his legacy as a wildlife manager by ... telling law enforcement to stand down, and being unnecessarily heavy-handed in eliminating entire wolf populations," Leahy said. "We're still reviewing whether he has the legal authority." By EVE BYRON Independent Record Wednesday, February 16, 2011 5:36 pm |
| Our hats off to Gov. Schweitzer for his stand up actions on our wolf issues. Give him your support and ask for his on SB255 and HB361 that may reach his desk soon. As for the Defenders of Wildlife you do more harm than good. If you are member of this group look hard at what they stand for. Know what you support!
